white lotus gambit: Frank's ideas

Page history last edited by Frank 12 years, 5 months ago

Iroh and Fung are seen using the white lotus gambit to see if the other is a member. It begins with the placing of a tile in the center of the board (a rose for Iroh and other grand lotuses). The players then mimic the shape of the tile by making a giant version of that tile on the board.  The shape has to be symmetrical on all sides, so whichever port a player sits at, they will see that shape and so both players have the same amount of tiles on the board. Most likely, the tiles used to start the game are flower tiles (i.e. jasmine, lily, white jade, rose, chrysanthemum, and rhododendron) and special tiles (i.e. white lotus and white dragon). Non-flower tiles can be added while playing the game. This starts the game.

The players use the same rules as regular pai sho (see page: Frank's pai sho rules ) except to win the game, a player must make a chain of harmonies around the center of the board. The chain can be any size and shape. Bets can be placed. A certain amount of money can be charged for losing a tile and the player who makes the first complete ring wins the game, and therefore, the money.

The rose tile is the only known tile used for this game, although the rock and jasmone tile are also possible.

So i'm guessing to start a game:

  •     Place tile in the center of the board
  •    Make the shape of a lotus tile on the board. One side for each player. Random flower tiles and special tiles are placed on the board. Non-flower tiles can be added during the game.
  •    Normal rules of Pai Sho, except to win you have to make a chain of harmonies around the center of the board.

Note: i don't think Iroh and Fung actually played a game, i think they set up a game.

Hm, very nice. But I, for one, think that the ritual performed by iroh and fung isn't a game at all, and follows no rules. My theory is that it's actually forbidden to drop a rose into the center. If Iroh played like this, every outsider would think he's just a moron, but Lotus members know at once that he's a member, perhaps even his rank. So, to confirm that iroh is facing a fellow Lotus, that one wouldn't say anything and continue with the game, ending in mimicing the form of the tile.
But anyway, nice job :)

Still, when Iroh and Fung 'played', they only put tiles, and they didn't move any. So maybe in white lotus gambit, the placing of tiles at ports is neglected? Or maybe the rule of the ports is not meant to be there in the first place?
